Description

Development of Chinese, Japanese and Korean societies through the late 19th century. Recommended that HST 290, HST 291 and HST 292 be taken in sequence, but not required.

Learning outcomes

Outcome 1: Exhibit knowledge of the chronological flow of human history by ordering a series of significant events in Japanese history from the pre-literate era through the 19th century.
Outcome 2: Identify major themes of historical change in Japanese history such as changes in forms of transportation, changes in forms from agrarian to pre-industrial economies, or changes in forms of migration [immigration/emigration] from the pre-literate era through the 19th century.
Outcome 3: Employ historical thinking and inquiry to understand and to interpret events, issues, developments, relationships and perspectives of Japanese history from the pre-literate era through the 19th century.
Outcome 4: Identify, analyze, develop and defend particular thematic interpretations of historical change in Japan from the pre-literate era through the 19th century. Explain how and why historical interpretations differ and how they are affected by time [i.e., historical context].
Outcome 5: Analyze causal relationships in Japanese history from the pre-literate era through the 19th century and apply more than one perspective to show how these causal relationships might have different interpretations.
Outcome 6: Utilize evidence from primary and secondary sources to understand and describe events, issues, developments, relationships, and perspectives of Japanese history from the pre-literate era through the 19th century.
Outcome 7: Understand relationships among events, issues and developments in different spheres of human activity [i.e., economic, social, political, cultural] in Japan from the pre-literate era through the 19th century.
Outcome 8: Recognize change and continuity within broad concept themes such as the interaction of peoples, cultures and ideas or economic and technological developments and their impact on Japanese society from the pre-literate era through the 19th century.
Outcome 9: Use formal and informal writing to develop and to express historical interpretations and analysis of Japanese history from the pre-literate era through the 19th century.
Outcome 10: Demonstrate an understanding of multicultural and international components in Japanese history from the pre-literate era through the 19th century.
Upon successful completion of this course students will have demonstrated competence in these outcomes as evidenced by a cumulative score of 70% or more on exams, formal written work and seminar discussions.
