Description

This is a three-credit course designed for students majoring in Addiction Studies, Massage Therapy, Health Information Technology, among others. Includes topics from pre-algebra and descriptive statistics. MTH 031 is not designed to serve as a prerequisite to MTH 060.

Learning outcomes

1. Students will write ratios and solve problems involving proportions
2. Students will convert numbers between decimals, fractions, and/or percents
3. Students will solve problems involving percents
4. Students will construct graphs (pie charts, bar graphs, histograms, stem--leaf plots) to display and interpret data
5. Students will organize quantitative data into frequency tables
6. Students will calculate and apply measures of center (mean, median, and mode) and understand their relationship to the shape of a distribution
7. Students will calculate and apply measures of dispersion (range, variance, standard deviation, inner-quartile range)
8. Students will calculate measures of position (percentiles, quartiles, and z-scores)
9. Students will calculate the 5-number summary, create and interpret box-plots, and find outliers
10. Students will understand the properties of the normal curve (bell curve), and determine percentages using z-scores and
statistical tables
