Course Description
Introduces drawing the clothed and unclothed figure using a variety of techniques and media. Uses models for the study of the human figure and portrait. Addresses representational and expressive approaches. Repeatable for credit.
Course learning outcomes
1. Apply effective use of materials and tools in the creation of works.\\n
2. Create figure drawings that integrate gesture, structure, and space.
3. Contextualize self-created work within the historical and cultural traditions of figurative art.
4. Use media-specific terminology to receive and provide feedback.
5. Apply the elements of art and principles of design to figure drawings to communicate form, depth, and emphasis.
Content outline
- Gesture drawing of the human form
- Drawings of drapery on figures and casts
- Spatial organization: ground plane, overlap, foreshortening
- Human anatomy for drawing: skeletal, muscular, head, and face
- Value and light–shadow (chiaroscuro)
- Design elements for the figure: shape, line, contrast, positive/negative space
- Constructive critique: giving and receiving feedback between instructor and classmates
