Course Description

Explores the intersection of traditional and digital scientific illustration using industry-standard software. Emphasizes advanced observational accuracy and effective communication. Builds on the foundations and digital techniques covered in ART 141 and 142. Repeatable for credit.

Course learning outcomes

1. Produce detailed scientific illustrations using both traditional and digital techniques.
2. Analyze the evolution of scientific illustration and its role in science communication.
3. Apply techniques for accurate rendering of scientific subjects in traditional and digital media.
4. Create illustrations that integrate concept development, iterative sketching, and composition to convey scientific content accurately.
5. Employ both field and virtual research methods to ensure scientific accuracy in illustrations.
6. Use media-specific terminology to receive and provide feedback.

Content outline

1. Advanced concepts and vocabulary in science illustration.
2. Comprehensive exploration and practical application of various scientific illustration disciplines, including field sketching, zoology, botany, geology, and other scientific domains.
3. Use traditional and digital media for creating scientific illustrations.
4. Advanced application of elements of art and principles of design.
5. Constructive critique: giving and receiving feedback between instructor and classmates.
