Course Description
Intermediate studio course with emphasis on developing skills and technical knowledge in mold making processes. Topics covered include plaster molds for ceramic slip casting, block molds, two part and complex molds. Lecture and research topics encompass Mold Making and Casting in Art and Industry, Historical Uses of Mold Making, and Contemporary Materials/Processes.
Course learning outcomes
1. Create an effective plan for molding an object including determining draft and defining parting lines.
2. Assess the limitations and possibilities of different mold types in selecting for particular applications.
3. Demonstrate safe practice, handling and cleanup of those materials used – including plaster, ceramic slip and urethane rubber.
4. Use various techniques for employing molds in the creation of an artwork, multiples or an edition.
5. Analyze and describe usage of mold making techniques in historical and contemporary objects.
6. Identify the visual and technical concepts relevant to mold made sculptural and functional forms.

- Proper use and safety of casting slip (porcelain or other)
- Repetition and variation
- Historical and contemporary perspectives in the artistic function of three-dimensional multiples.
- Other materials and methods of mold making and casting (including mother molds and glove molds)
