Course Description

Focuses on finding, evaluating, and using web-based or other information resources responsibly for college-level research in the fields of education and early learning. Introduces information resources and research skills, emphasizing early learning resources, education resources, and children’s literature collections.

Course learning outcomes

1. Identify key services and resources within COCC Library’s physical and online environments with emphasis on the library’s early learning resources, education resources, and Children’s Literature and Equity Resource Center (CLERC) collections on all COCC campuses.
2. Select a research tool appropriate to the type of information needed in an education/early learning context.
3. Use research tools appropriate for the fields of education and early learning.
4. Identify bias and diversity issues when conducting research.
5. Demonstrate generally-accepted ethical and responsible information usage.

Content outline

Addresses a variety of research skills appropriate for education/early learning students, including

  1. Selecting a topic
  2. Navigating the library website and selecting appropriate resources
  3. Utilizing key features of proprietary databases
  4. Identifying bias and diversity issues in information resources
  5. Using information responsibly and identifying the purpose of citations
