Course Description

This is an introductory course that will explore how to best meet the needs of English Language Learners in early childhood and elementary classrooms. We will examine how language skills are acquired and how to assess what stage of language acquisition students are in. We will also explore a variety of effective teaching strategies and materials that can be used in the classroom to help students develop both social and academic language proficiency. Three hours of field placement is required.

1. Explain how language is learned.
2. Identify effective strategies for teaching English language learner students both social skills as well as academic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
3. Create a supportive learning environment for second language students.
4. Model English language effectively for your students.
5. Plan, implement, and assess classroom instruction for a diverse group of students.
6. Create positive relationships with the families of your students.
7. Explain the SIOP model of language instruction, which is used by the Bend-La Pine School District in training teachers to work with English language learner students.

  7. Summarize the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model of language instruction which is used by the Bend-LaPine School District in training teachers to work with ELL students

Required materials

Students are required to use a course textbook, have regular access to Blackboard, and will need to cover costs related to field placement completion.
