Course Description
Introduces the study of leadership as well as the application of leadership theories, concepts and skills. Students will develop their own leadership potential through the completion of personal and leadership self-assessments, values exploration, and leadership skill applications through course activities. The course will examine topics such as: understanding leadership; recognizing leadership traits; understanding philosophy and styles as it relates to the Fire Service; motivating employees; handling conflict; addressing ethics and communication in leadership.
Course learning outcomes
1. Apply critical thinking to leadership theories and practices.
2. Recognize the importance of ethics and communication skills in leadership.
3. Demonstrate an awareness of your strengths and weaknesses as they relate to you as an employee, supervisor and peer.
4. Describe the basics of group roles, dynamics, and decision-making.
