Course Description
Overview of recreational resource management including study of land and water resources used for outdoor recreation. Includes planning and management of natural and cultural resources for long-term resource productivity.
Course learning outcomes
1. Define recreation and discuss the trends, historical context, principles and philosophy that\\nhave shaped the field of recreational resource management.
2. Relate ways in which social conflict and resource values affect recreation use demands,\\nagency missions, environmental considerations, and political interests.
3. List and describe the role of agencies and interest groups in the provision and management of recreation in outdoor settings.
4. Describe and provide examples of positive and negative social, cultural and ecological impacts of recreation.
5. Analyze and apply concepts, theories, and tools for recreation resource management (e.g. Recreation Opportunity Spectrum System, Limits of Acceptable Change, carrying capacity, Beneficial Outcomes Approach to Leisure, Benefits-Based Management and other current approaches).
6. Relate knowledgeably the issues of, opportunities in, and challenges facing recreation.
7. Analyze techniques for influencing and managing visitor behavior.
8. Gather, comprehend, and communicate scientific and technical information in order to\\nexplore ideas, models, and solutions and generate further questions.
9. Apply scientific and technical modes of inquiry, individually, and collaboratively, to critically evaluate existing or alternative explanations, solve problems, and make evidence-based decisions in an ethical manner.
10. Assess the strengths and weaknesses of scientific studies and critically examine the influence of scientific and technical knowledge on human society and the environment.
