Develops skills to interpret drug labels, medication orders, and prevent errors while understanding side effects and proper dispensing strategies. Emphasizes anti-infective, respiratory, urinary, and musculoskeletal drugs, as well as skin medications, vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements. Prepares students to ensure safe and effective medication administration through patient education and best practices in healthcare.
Course learning outcomes
1. Recognize the principles of drug action in the body and individual cells, including body absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination.
2. Recognize how to promote safety best and avoid medication errors through drug label and medication order literacy skills.
3. Interpret the possible side effects and related dispensing strategies for each drug class and specific agents.
4. Describe the pharmacological properties, mechanisms of action, and clinical uses of anti-infective, respiratory, urinary, and musculoskeletal drugs.
5. Evaluate the therapeutic uses, potential interactions, and patient education considerations for skin medications, vitamins, minerals, and herbs.
