Course Description

Examines how neurotransmitters function in the nervous system and explores pharmaceuticals used in neurological and mental health care. Prompts students to analyze the pharmacological management of reproductive health and autoimmune diseases, with a focus on biologic and immunosuppressive therapies. Emphasizes understanding drug action, metabolism, and elimination, with practical skills in preventing medication errors and managing side effects across various drug classes.

Course learning outcomes

1. Recognize the principles of drug action in the body and individual cells, including body absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination.
2. Recognize how to promote safety best and avoid medication errors through drug label and medication order literacy skills.
3. Interpret the possible side effects and related dispensing strategies for each drug class and specific agents.
4. Indicate the action of neurotransmitters in the nervous system and relate to classes of pharmaceuticals that affect neurotransmitter activity, including neurological and mental health drugs.
5. Evaluate the pharmacological management of reproductive health and autoimmune diseases, including biologic and immunosuppressive drugs.
