Description

Introduces students to the knowledge and skills that are necessary in providing nursing care to individual patients experiencing an altered state of health. The clinical lab focuses on developing skills in the areas of medication administration, intravenous therapy, and simple wound management. The clinical practicum provides students with the opportunity to apply knowledge and clinical skills to the adult patient with medical-surgical nursing needs. Second term of the practical nursing certificate and the nursing degree.

Learning outcomes

1. Nurse as Health Promoter and Care Provider: Apply the assessment and intervention steps of the Nursing Process in the implementation of care for one patient based on established standards.
2. Nurse as Care Manager: Organize and deliver a core set of nursing skills to one patient as a member of the nursing team.
3. Nurse as Professional Colleague: Apply professional behaviors consistently as a member of the nursing team.
4. Nurse as Quality Care Advocate: Support evidence-based practice through application of nursing science.
5. Nurse as User of Technology and Informatics: Incorporate technological skills in the delivery and documentation of nursing interventions.

Grading methods

The course grade is determined by the student’s performance in the theory, assignments, clinical practicum, and lab practicum components of the course; all of these components must be passed to pass the course (see course syllabus for details).
