Introduces trade and generic names of commonly prescribed drugs used in prevention and treatment of various disease entities. Emphasizes important contraindications, side effects, precautions and interaction of drugs, and the process of drug utilization review. Covers pharmacological categories and factors than can affect drug kinetics.
Course learning outcomes
1. Recall the processes of pharmacokinetics, terms to describe beneficial and harmful effects of drugs, and drug interactions.
2. Recall the roles of receptors in the body, common drug interactions, and “rights” of correct drug administration.
3. List components of a prescription, common dosage forms, routes of administration, factors that influence effects of drugs, and the role of the pharmacy technician.
4. Recall principles of how various classes of pharmaceuticals act in different body systems, including the central nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, muscles and joints.
