The Medical Coding one-year certificate of completion provides individuals education to understand the sequencing of codes and their impact on reimbursement and training on how to assign diagnostic codes and procedure codes. This program provides a thorough understanding of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT/HCPCS coding to prepare students to sit for a national coding certification exam to earn credentials as an entry-level professional medical coder.

  1. Analyze health record content to abstract information required to support accurate coding.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the etiology, pathology, signs, symptoms, prognosis of diseases, diagnostic studies, treatment modalities, and procedures to correctly apply diagnoses and procedure codes.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of medical coding conventions and guidelines for diagnostic and procedural coding.
  4. Apply principles of healthcare privacy, patient confidentiality, data security, and regulatory compliance.
  5. Communicate both verbally and in written form with health care team members in an effective, appropriate, and professional manner.

Academic Entrance Requirements

Before enrolling in HIM 190 HIPAA for Health Information Management Professionals, students must pass AH 111 Medical TerminologyCIS 120 Computer ConceptsBA 214 Business Communications, and either BI 105 Human Biology for Health Science Careers or BI 231 Human Anatomy and Physiology I.

Required:

  • Total cost depends upon preparatory coursework and extent of completion within the program (certificate/degree). Additional costs, estimated to be approximately $2,500, include textbooks, technology fees, EHRGo subscription, AHIMA VLab subscription, OrHIMA annual conference, AHIMA student membership fee, etc.

Recommended:

  • This is a fully online program and students are expected to have access to a computer with a web camera and reliable high-speed internet.

Advising notes

Medical Coding CC1 is a cohort program, which begins each Fall. Students must complete most non-HIM courses before entry into the cohort. Upon entry into the cohort BI 232 may be taken in Fall and BI 233  and COMM 218Z may be taken in Winter. Courses are in sequence for the academic year.

  • Students must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA to earn a COCC certificate or degree.
  • All courses in the program must be completed with a grade of C or higher.
  • All prerequisites courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher.
