Course Description

Builds on the the skills learned in ART 165 including camera techniques, sound, and editing. Explores development of an independent short film production in the roles of writer, producer, videographer, and editor. Emphasizes taking a film project through the production process, including pre- and post-production. Repeatable for credit.

Course learning outcomes

1. Use advanced camera settings to produce specialized effects or composition for video production.
2. Create dynamic lighting setups to enhance video quality and create specific moods.
3. Develop a complex narrative or sequence that evokes certain emotions or tells a compelling story.
4. Demonstrate ability to engage pre-production film practices, such as storyboarding, budgets, logistics, screenplay writing and editing, timeline, location permits/permissions, location scouting, and hiring crew.
5. Demonstrate development of production skills, including on-location problem solving.
6. Demonstrate ability to perform post-production editing using industry standard software for motion graphics and visual effects.
7. Use media-specific terminology to receive and provide feedback.

Production

  3. Framing, composition, and camera movement techniques
  4. Capturing audio, sound FX, and voice overs
  5. Focus peaking, zebra patterns, and LUTs
  6. Gels, reflectors, and diffusers
  7. Composition including leading lines, symmetry, and depth of field
  8. Movement through sliders, drones, and gimbals
  9. Symbolism and thematic elements

Post-Production

  1. Sound syncing
  2. Color grading and enhanced lighting
  3. Professional presentations for various digital platforms
  4. Copyright laws, permissions, and ethical guidelines in video production
  5. Multi-layered timelines and advanced transitions

Constructive critiques: receiving and giving feedback between instructor and classmates
