Course Description

Introduces the art of custom framing for all types of artwork. Techniques for identifying types of art and how to properly display and protect them. Create custom frames, hand-cut mats, glazing, and mounting using framing-specialized tools. Conversational practices will be emphasized. Repeatable for credit.

Course learning outcomes

1. Describe the fundamental principles of frame shop and artwork safety and tool/equipment care.
2. Practice safe procedures while working in a frame shop environment.
3. Identify different art media and explain framing opinions from minimal to conservational quality.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of framing components and their archival qualities.
5. Create custom framed pieces for different types of art media using best practices.
6. Deconstruct a previously framed piece of art, assess, and reframe to enhance the artwork.
7. Use media-specific terminology to receive and provide feedback.
