Course Description

Builds on topics from SUS 297A: Sustainable Practices: Art. Develop a unique art project using only sustainable practices in a variety of media. Theme for the project is sustainability advocacy through inspiring thought and/or ethical engagement with implementation of actionable solutions. Project emphasizes individualized personal expression and exploration and will provide opportunity for in-depth concept, research, development, and final presentation of long term project. Repeatable for credit.

Course learning outcomes

1. Create a portfolio-ready final work or series that employs sustainable materials and practices.
2. Write a concise concept statement that details the project’s sustainable materials and processes.
3. Prepare project for exhibition.
4. Use media-specific terminology when receiving and providing feedback.
5. Sustainability outcome: Explain the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic systems in the context of art and design.
6. Sustainability outcome: Analyze the major environmental, social, and economic challenges and potential solutions of our time using a systems thinking approach.
7. Sustainability outcome: Apply principles of sustainability to the development of personal values and professional goals.

Content outline

  1. Concept and timeline for sustainability-focused project 
  2. Project research, references, and materials 
  3. Present work in progress to class and instructor for feedback throughout the term 
  4. Prepare finished project for exhibition (concept statement, printing, framing, displays, etc.) depending on type of art 
  5. Final presentation of project to class 
  6. Constructive critique, giving and receiving feedback between instructor and classmates
