Course Description

Provides a broad overview of the field of addictions. Describes the etiology of addiction, the signs and symptoms of addiction, the continuum of addictive behaviors, treatment, prevention, recovery and relapse. Will examine similarities and differences between chemical/substance addictions and behavioral/process addictions.

Course learning outcomes

1. Explain how social, political, economic, cultural systems, as well as gender and lifestyle, impact substance and process abuse.
2. Articulate how legal considerations have impacted substance use behaviors through history.
3. Describe screening, diagnostic criteria, intervention and treatment processes for substance and process abuse.
4. Analyze similarities and differences between substance abuse and process disorders.
