Course Description
Builds on the concepts from BH 162 and provides central theoretical and empirical tenets of Motivational Interviewing (MI). Provides practice of skills to deliver the intervention to a wide range of clients in diverse settings. Students will learn and practice both the spirit and techniques of MI. A large portion of this class is dedicated to skill development based on material covered in class and requires small group lab work.
Course learning outcomes
1. Define motivational interviewing and the basic structure of its use in behavior change.
2. Describe techniques used as part of motivational interviewing to assess ambivalence and foster change in the client.
3. Demonstrate in lab real play scenarios motivational interviewing skills.
4. Demonstrate in lab real play scenarios the ability to utilize appropriate Motivational Interviewing techniques based on client history and presentation.
