Course Description

Explores the environmental, social, and economic impacts of art and design practices, materials, and concepts historically and today. Emphasis on artistic practices and topics in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.

Course learning outcomes

1. Evaluate sustainability practices relevant to the art and design media, studio, and/or equipment and tools used.
2. Assess environmental, social, and economic subject matter in art and design.
3. Analyze artwork produced within historical and cultural traditions with a focus on sustainability.
4. Use media-specific terminology when receiving and providing feedback.
5. Sustainability outcome: Explain the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic systems in the context of art and design.
6. Sustainability outcome: Analyze the major environmental, social, and economic challenges and potential solutions of our time using a systems thinking approach.
7. Sustainability outcome: Apply principles of sustainability to the development of personal values and professional goals.

5. Documentation of process, outcome summary, and implementation plan as applied to media, studio, and/or equipment and tools used in art and design
6. Constructive critique, giving and receiving feedback between instructor and classmates
